My Souls Eternal Playlist

I’m going to have a little fun with the blog today. I have read so many interviews with authors that talk about what music they listen to while they write. I have seen them create their own playlists to go along with their writing. I mentioned before that music is essential to my writing process and that my preferences were all over the place.

In this “soundtrack” for Souls Eternal I have included songs that inspired certain scenes and some that just set the mood for what I was writing. Sometimes I did have to reign myself in, because if I got a particular song that I love to sing along with, no writing was getting done.

This list is just a small sample of what I listened to. I found myself listening to quite a few other artists from Alanis Morissette to Garth Brooks. My playlist was endless and eclectic. I know not all of these will appeal to everyone, but they certainly brought me inspiration when I needed it.

Paul McCartney: Singalong Junk--This one has been featured in several movies and TV shows that I've watched. There is just something about it that instills a romantic feeling. I pretty much listened to this one every night before I started writing, just to get "in the mood".

Van Tramp: Hope & Pray--This was a relatively unknown British band. The lead singer, Tim Howar, played Roger in Rent on Broadway in 2006, when I saw it. I immediately fell in love with his voice. Sadly, Van Tramp is no longer together, but Tim is now singing for Mike and the Mechanics.

Walk the Moon: Shut Up and Dance--This was just a fun song that made me smile. I loved it's 80's vibe from the time I first heard it. I really enjoyed their whole album, but this was by far my favorite. This is one that also proved as a distraction, as I found myself singing and dancing with it many times.

Arcadia: The Flame--Three members of my favorite band, Duran Duran, split off and created So Red The Rose back in 1985. I loved this album so much that I wore it out. Last year, I had a nagging desire to listen to it, but I realized I didn't have it in cd or digital form, so I remedied that situation quickly. That whole album became a regular on the playlist. Also, when my 12 year old daughter heard this particular song, she had to have it too. I love introducing her to music!

Tonic: You Wanted More--This was one that was more an inspiration for events that took place in the book. I do really love Tonic's music and highly recommend their album, Sugar.

Cheap Trick: Say Goodbye--I've been a fan of Cheap Trick since I was a pre-teen. This is probably my absolute favorite song. They have many that I love, but there is just something about this particular song that gets me.

Bree Sharp: Walk Away--Most people are not familiar with Bree Sharp; but you may be familiar with a song she released in the late 90's called "David Duchovny". I am a huge X-files fan and love DD. I had never heard this song until a friend called me one day and asked me if I was writing songs cause he heard one that he was certain I had to have written. :-) I grabbed up her cd and have loved it since. This particular song was pivotal in one scene that I had to get in the "mood" to write.

Heavens Sake: Second Time Around--My friends from high school will be more familiar with this artist. My long-time good friend, Tim Beeman, was in a band in the 90's and this is hands down my favorite song by them. Those that listened to the Less Desirables podcast that I was on, in September, should recognize Tim as one of the hosts/producer of that podcast. This one also proved helpful with writing specific events. I was very relieved to find it on YouTube so I could share it.

Rod Stewart: I Don’t Wanna Talk About It--I went through a Rod Stewart phase while writing. I just love him. I have always loved this song, but it's just so sad. It definitely helped to get me into that melancholy mood at a certain point.

Sophie B. Hawkins: Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover--Sophie has been a little-known favorite of mine for a long time. I love this song! It really evokes that longing feeling of really wanting to be with someone.

Tarzia/Cipolla: Sunset in Capri--I listened to a lot of Italian "folk" music while I was writing all of the scenes in Italy. It just made me "feel" like I was there.

Little Mermaid Soundtrack: Kiss the Girl--So, for those that have read Souls Eternal, you know that this song was pivotal in chapter seventeen. And here's a fun fact for you, this particular scene was "inspired" by an event that actually happened to me.

Incubus: Drive--I found this song popping up in my head many mornings after I had written the night before, and realized that it meant something to a developing relationship in my story. I don't typically listen to Incubus, but I do really like this song.

Rob Thomas: Someday--I am a really rabid Rob Thomas/MB20 fan! I always loved this song and it really fit with the story line. Maybe things aren't right at this moment, but perhaps someday you will both get it right enough to make it happen.

Wow! That was a lot more work than I thought it would be, but it was fun! I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by!

Shonna
